My interest is in family history.
My grand father was Isaac Haskins who was a coal dealer, undertaker and other things. I understand that at some time around 1900 he owned, in partnership the Vulcan Yards. I would like to find out more about him. Around 1910 he moved to Liverpool, but he was buried in Earlstown. Please assist |

I'm only 19 but have a massive interest in newtons history, as i have resided here all my life. The work put into this site is amazing, not to mention all the pictures, ive always had a fascination with Newton Hall and the Curzon and i love the pictures of them, shame there isnt pictures of inside Newton Hall, that wud be great :-D Can anyone find pictures of Grosvenor Gardens before or during the building of the houses on it (as thats where i live) cheers.

I would just like to congratulate you Steve on producing such an excellent site, I wish I had photographs to give you but alas all I have are memories in my mind. I was born and raised in Fern Avenue Wargrave thru th 50's and 60's, I played rugby for the Vulcan club and for the Newton Club on Crow lane and I also played in Newton Hall as a young lad. What a brill site this is. A very big thankyou. My parents ran the grocers known as "Macs" on the corner of Wargrave and Victoria Roads for almost 45 years. I grew up there and often played in eavesways yard as well as old wargrave road and the garages. I have numerous pics and cine film somewhere in the loft so I will try and find them. My mates were Peter Newton, Francis Carlin & Alec ferguson. Love the Curzon pics. I rememeber when Ena Sharples waved to the crowds from the balcony. The old colliery line that crossed wargrave road and the accident which left a loco on its side. So many memories. :-D

Brilliant Website! I was born in Acorn St 1939. Went to the Park School then to Patterson St.Played football for the school also Newton Boys. Used to play a lot in the Mesnes Park,New Park and around Castle Hill. Have lived near Stafford last 23 years, still call in to see the old place every few months. Two of my old school mates have written in Graham Robinson and Frank Edwards. Keep up the good work! :-P |

I am researching my family tree (Whamond & Muscroft) and have visited Earlestown a few times with my aunt Barbara Whamond, we have found the people of the town very helpful and friendly, I am searching for what I believe to be the only picture available of the grocers shop on the corner of Tamworth St and Lord St, it was in a local publication that is no longer in circulation (Earlestown.a history of a railway town)...can any of you nice people help and send me the picture please...cmcarr@ntlworld.com |

My gr t Grandfather Robert Steadwas brought up in Earlestown together with his brothers and sisters in the 1880's.Likewise my grandfather Harold John Stead and his brothers sisters believed lived in Park Lane. Amazing site I was born and bred in NLW and have lived in the vicinity ever since.I was brought up in Daisy Ave, then moved to Borron Rd and Acorn St, my brother still lives on the Whites estate. As a child I used to play in Newton Hall and lost my virginity in the barn at the back. Everyone talks about global warming but I remember walking across Newton lake around 1960 when the brook had been reduced to a trickle. I remember going to the Curzon matinee on a Saturday then chips at Rileys chippy on the way home. As a Mod I went to Vicars and the Cricket club where I met my wife, we both went to St. Aelreds and so did our daughters.I think building a housing estate on the Vulcan would be a disaster, and if they build in the Dip I remember Newton Hall was raised because of the water table, so anyone buying a house there will need some wellies. Congratulations on a very informative and interesting site.
I lived in Earle Street in the 50's and 60's. My parents owned the newspaper shop near the Ram's Head. I moved to Crow Lane in the late 60's and then moved away from NLW altogether. (My parents moved away fifteen years ago and now live in Herefordshire.)
I am now living in Hong Kong and working as a barrister. I hope to return to NLW soon to see what has become of it. The photographs on the site make it seem an attractive town. I must say that I recall it differently.

A most interesting and informative site. In 1870 my great grandfather, John Crawshaw, gave Ashton Villa, Newton le Willows, as his address on discharge from the Army but subsequently settled in Ashton in Makerfield. Does anybody have any knowledge od Ashton Villa please?

More than thirty years ago I spent a year at Newton-le-Willows Grammar School as an assistant teacher for German. I'll be back between August 3rd and 6th with colleagues from the teaching profession preparing the visit of a larger group of teachers to this area. Our points of interest: 1) Vulvan Village: Is there anyone familiar with the history of the place who would be prepared to show us round the place? 2) Schools: Would it be possible to meet teachers of the Selwyn Jones High School who could inform us about all the changes the school system has undergone in the last twenty years. (From the picture gallery I take it that the old bulding that I still knew as the grammar school doesn't exist any more...) 3) The development of the industrial North in the last 20 years.

many people who visit the park were allerton tower once stood on the outskirts of liverpool. do not realise that hardman earle lived there . only the out buildings and the lodge are standing. he and his family are buried in st peters church woolton which is about a quarter of a mile from the grounds of allerton tower . i hope this small item will be of interest to those who visit the Newton le Willows website. |
