Just to register my regret at the ending of the forum. It was an interesting & enjoyable way to tap into other peoples views, insights, knowledge etc even if you didn't neccessarily agree with them. It was properly managed by the owner of the site (which is as it should be), it was free & its closure is a big loss for those of us interested in our N l W heritage. It seems Steve Dowd was on the wrong end of some unpleasant mail & its a pity that people have indulged themselves in personalised attacks on him which have lead him to take this drastic action. What a damn shame. |

Hi everyone,
Re: GALLOWAY family
I've just discovered this brilliant website in trying to do my family tree. I knew that my grandfather used to work at a printers in N-le-W proofreading railway timetables, so I just googled "printers newton le willows" and up came your site. Discovered the McCorquodale History and all fell into place. However they were all big families so there may be some more of them I don't know about still up there.
So, does anyone know any GALLOWAYs, or anything about any of them?
My grandfather was John Adams Galloway born about 1873 and his parents were Alexander Galloway born in Scotland in 1841 and Marion (nee Aitken); they were married in Manchester in 1866. I found out Marion's maiden name as a direct result of your website - it says in the article on Crow Lane Church that Alexander was buried with his father in law William Aitken. So many thanks for that piece of the puzzle.
Alexander had several children as well as my grandfather John Adams; There was Frederick Alexander born 1867, Robert Arthur born 1874, Jessie Goodwin born 1878 and Elizabeth Kate born 1882 that I know of. Are any of their descendants still living in Newton le Willows? I would love to hear from anyone who knows anything at all about any of these Galloways, Thank you.
(Thanks for the post, but, you should use the history forum to search for such details, and not the guest book..Steven Dowd) |

Hi there, just found site while looking up info on Newton. Absolutely fab site. I have lived here over 60 yrs. never wanted to live anywhere else. My Dad, were he still alive, would have been fascinated by site. He used to spend hours talking about when he was a lad round here. My earlist memories are of the corner shop in Cherry St. Corcorans,Russells shop, corner of Birch st.Swimming in the doubles over by Lymme pit and going to the matinees at the Rink, where the police station now stands.Happy days |

Yours is a marvellous website! Friendly, fascinating and highly professional. Like so many of your visitors, I came across you because of interest in family history. I got here through the link on the NLW & Earlestown war memorial site. I only came to Newton once but I'd love to visit it again. It was in the 1950s when my great uncle Gerald Collingwood was the manager or director of Vulcan. He may have been the last before it was taken over by English Electric. His father William had been at Vulcan from 1890s till early 1920s. Other relatives were there too, incl Hugh Arbuthnott and Fred Whalley. Congratulations on a great website! |

Very nice web site. I'm just starting to track down my grandmother's hometown before she came to the U.S. in the late 1800's. I don't have much to go on other than she grew up in Earlestown near Liverpool. Is this the right town? Thanks/TS

What a brill site this is. A very big thankyou. My parents ran the grocers known as "Macs" on the corner of Wargrave and Victoria Roads for almost 45 years. I grew up there and often played in eavesways yard as well as old wargrave road and the garages. I have numerous pics and cine film somewhere in the loft so I will try and find them. My mates were Peter Newton, Francis Carlin & Alec ferguson. Love the Curzon pics. I rememeber when Ena Sharples waved to the crowds from the balcony. The old colliery line that crossed wargrave road and the accident which left a loco on its side. So many memories. :-D
Looking for any m8s or any one who knew Steve and Rhoda Mc email davemc1708@ntlworld.com
Best wishes Dave |

Hi, what a fantastic site. My grandparents (Layland) used to live at Cedar Crescent in Newton le Willows and my Gt Grandparents (Whamond) at Booth Street in Earlestown.
I went to Wargrave school briefly (c1957) but not for long as my Dad was in the army and we were always on the move. I haven't had time to explore the whole site yet but I'm looking forward to doing so. Keep up the good work! |
