As a boy I lived on Common Road for some years and I married Jean Miller who lived in Alder St, Earlestown. I remember the Broughton brothers, Mary Scragg, Frances Kasakitas who lived on the Common.

fantastic web site, well done to everyone. I was one of many who used to visit the earlstown and warrington sceen in the late 60s and 70s as always you loose touch with your friends from your teens. I would very much like to contact anyone who remembers me from that era. I used to go to the Vulcan club, St Aeldreds (spelling??)but it was a school disco. Warrington, Carlton club, Lion, Feathers, bell hall, twisted wheel, etc. I remember a girl who at the time was my girlfriend. she lived in Wargrave, Janet Lymor. She moved to Ryhll in north Wales many years ago and I have very fond memories of her...If you remember me please contact...

I lived on earl Street as a boy in the mid 60s and used to spend a lot of time down at the canal, catching frogs and sticklebacks, or pleading with workers at the sugar works to "Throw us some candy!" A friend an I once climbed into the empty but not yet derelict Vulcan works, where we spent a happy day rummaging around the mysterious interior :-)

I used to drive LUT Buses regular around the Newton Earlestown area in the 60s,including many works services to the Vulcan & Viaduct works..Also as a small boy I was in hospital when they brought 2 badly burned men into the ward, they had been sinking the shaft for Parkside Colliery when they struck gas and an explosion occurred....

Hi Pete, spoke to our Ste and told him you was asking about him. He has told me to ask how your doing. My Dad passed away 16 years ago, he did think the world of you and thought that you was good enough to play profesional football. Read where you played football for whiston, i bet i have played against you for wargrave fc and didnt know it was you. Would have been 20 years ago. Me and our kid are still big bolton fans.

p.s Our Ste was made up to hear from you. Wheres your Tony living?

My mother is from Newton..she married my dad & moved to the States in 1957. To this day, she has never become a citizen. Home is England. To make a very long story short..my younger (only) sibling passed last summer. I doubt my mum will ever recover. Could anyone provide history/photos of the William Green family. I only know of an Oak Street address. I apologize for the scant information..but if anyone could help, I think it would bring a smile to mum's face! I miss seeing that!

In researching my family helped by having a copy of my paternal grandfather's marriage certificate I have found your site confirming some family legend. In the 1871 census my Gt. Grandfather W. H. Dagnall is shown as an Iron Foundry Manager living in Vitriol Road. In the 1881 census still a foundry manager he is living at 44 Cross lane. His wife had died when their youngest child, Eleanor, was born in about 1875. He died in about 1883 and the family split up Eleanor being taken in by a childless couple named Barcroft. In the 1891 census at 294 Earle Street are living the Barcrofts, Eleanor incorrectly shewn as a Barcroft and grandfather E. J. George aged 24 Company secretary and Commercial Manager of Richard Evans & Co. In 1894 he married Eleanor and in the 1901 census with three sons my father being the youngest they are living in Cross Street, probably at no. 45. In 1905 the family moved to Consett, Co. Durham my grandfather having been appointed Secretary of the Conseet Iron Company. He retired in 1940 having been knighted for services to the Steel Industry. Eleanor died in 1922. Family legend was that Eleanor's father, William Hugh Dagnall was foundry manager for a firm called Vicars making biscuit machinery. Your web site provides I think confirmation.

Hi! I'm Christine Eltayeb nee Mort of Earlestown. I was also a pupil at The District school in the 1950's, and I remember Vanessa Battersby and her sister Olive. Olive was in my class. I also remember Janet Ashton. I have been in Muscat for the last 22 years with my husband who is Sudanese. Our two children grew up here. I teach English at the university. We used to visit Earlestown very often until my mother died in 1989. I have a brother Kenneth who lives in Morecambe. I could write for ever. It's so interesting to hear from old school friends. I have only just learned about the site!

I haven't visited this site since everyone in the forums started falling out a couple of years ago. Well done Stephen for getting it all sorted out. The forum is now as it should be - full of history and recollections of my old home town. I've spent four hours out of the last 24 catching up and finding out much that I hadn't previously known. Like the design of the whole site too. Keep it up, and thank you so much. Will be back for another visit to the site soon.
