I grew up on Davis Ave. N-L-W between 1945-1968. Moved to Canada in 1982. Chummed with Mike Parker, Kenny Woodacre, Ray Smith, Paul Fleming. Stumbled upon this site and would like to hear from anyone that grew up around that area or worked at Vic's or Rubery Owens between 1960-1982.

Oh my word, seeing photographs of myself at Patterson Street Nursery and Wargrave School is quite unnerving. My name then was Avril Pilkington and I'd love to hear from any of my peers from those days. My father and others worked with the Vulcan overseas crew for many years. I did live in the prefabs in Weedon Avenue for the first couple of years of my life, attending Gas Street School before moving on to Wargrave. We lived at No. 19 Larch Avenue until my marriage, then I lived in North Wales. Now retired and back in Newton-le-Willows. What a lovely site this is! |

Just visiting a old school friend in Newton and she showed me this sight. I am relpying to a message from Mal Brown from Wariington. I moved back into the area about 6 years ago. It's good to hear that someone besides me has pleasant recollections of St Aelreds Youth Club, The Carlton etc.etc. It is also nice to think that you have fond memories of me too and I'd be glad to know how you ar doing these days - Keep in touch Janet |

Thank you very much for such an interesting and informative site. It is a historical document in itself. I grew up in Newton and Burtonwood and combed almost every square inch as a youngster. Your site brought back so many good memories of my happy life in Newton. Thanks to all who contributed. |

I have traced a relative from army records to Newton le Willows. He is John Cody from Ireland and he was living at 34 Vesta Road, Earlestown in 1914 and on his death in 1958 he was living at 15 Fairclough Street, a retired sugar factory labourer. Don't know if he married. Just a long shot that somebody living in Fairclough Street might remember him. |

seek connections with Richard LANE & wife Hannah, later Mrs. EARLAM (wife of Joshua), originally from N. Yorkshire and settled in Earlestown with their family.
Their son John LANE married Ethel Annie HOLT (originally from Lymm).
Their son Harry LANE married Florrie OGDEN, daughter of John OGDEN and Elizabeth Ann (nee HOUGHTON).
John OGDEN's parents were Thomas OGDEN & Sarah (later Mrs. HILL {wife of Richard France HILL}, nee WOODWARD).
His only full blood sibling was James OGDEN, who with their mother and half siblings made their homes near Sandbach, Cheshire.
Hope you can follow that!

What a great site. Spent a full afternoon browsing - no-one got to eat 'till late!
I was born on Queens Drive and moved to Brookefield St to live with my grandparents, Rose and Charlie Gaskin, who worked at the Viaduct, while my father was on the hospital ships in the Royal Navy during the war years. We later moved to the 'top' of Market St. I was Educated at Earlestown District but moved out of town and I went to Culcheth Secondary Modern.. However, moved back to Earlestown in my early 20's. I lived in Derby St. and then Wargrave Road; right next door to the railway bridge, which used to flood if it rained hard. I remember watching locomotives on delivery to India going under the bridge and, I believe, they used to have to take air out of the wheels of the carriers to get under the bridge - is this correct? For a few years I catered to transport drivers for bed/breakfast and evening meals. Most of them were from Sotland, their depot was just at the back of the house so they didn't have far to walk. I was repetedly asked for years after I finished to start up again, I guess some one liked my cooking!!!
Reading the guest book brings back so many memories. I remeber buying dabs and sweets, but wasn't allowed 'beechnut", at Wests. Also during my time in Brookefield St. used to go to Baskervlles with my grandmother for meat. Later years "Mac's" on the corner and the little sweet shop next door, on the other side of the bridge was were I did a lot of my shopping, though have to say Earlestwn Market was my favourite place!!!
I had four children; Marie, Andrew, Paul and Elizabeth Layland who all went to the District School and then on to Selwyn Jones. Does anyone remember our family? One of my cousins married Eddie Richardson's daughter and I went to school with his sister Lillian Richardson. I believe they lived in one of the Viduct houses.
In 1981 we moved to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, which was still known at that time as one of the last frontiers. I now live in Alberta. I guess I must be showing (or feeling) my age as lots of these memories seem like it was only yesterday.
Again, a wonderful site will visit often.

Does anyone remember the little white cottage on Crow Lane West[top of common brow] My ancestors the Ashcroft family lived in it for many years, and my Grandmother used to tell me about the times when as a small child the horses were stabled there for the Newton Racecourse, then situated near the Swan Inn Sadly like lots of buildings it was demolished to make way for a modern bungalow I remember my cousin Frank Littler living there as a young man and having to lower his head to get through the front door. Such happy memories. |

Cliff Surtees here. I was a member of the Boys Club When Ken Dibble ran it in the early sixties, he was followed by Ray Tapkin. I joined the club because the full sized snooker table was cheaper, per hour, than the snooker hall's. Although i went off the rails when i left the club, it gave me a love of the mountains, something which has stuck with me all my life. I have worked with young people for over thirty years but now live in Bulgaria. I operate an accommodation ceter called Trinity Rocks Farm. please visit my website **
I would be glad to hear from anyone who was around during my days - early/mid sixtyies.
I know my life would not be the same if not for what was formally The Boys Club. Big thank you Cliff |

Hi All, Great website I was looking for some help in any way shape or form. My father Norman Shaw turns 60 in October, he was brought up in Valentine Road/Ruskin Avenue Earlsetown and went to Secondary Modern. He has 4 other brothers Colin, Peter ( currently in oz) Jackie & Derek who has now sadly passed away. Back to the request my Grandfather died in a house fire in 1996 and all the pictures and memories went with him. I was hoping that if possible someone may have pictures of him at school around 1959-1965 or if you have any other pictures that you deem I would appreciate.
Thanks All.
