History Society/Birley Street

Hi,

I have two queries, the first is about number 6 Birley Street in Newton which I noticed is up for sale. Does anyone know anything about the history of this house/row of houses, it seems unusual as it is built side on to a terrace.

I also wondered if there are any local history societies, I have seen one advertised in St Helens but didn't know how specific to St Helens or the wider area it may be.

The house that you mean, is it the one opposite St Peters School?

There is no Newton History Society, there was one I believe it closed down and disbanded around 12 years ago, the one that advertises in teh St Helens Paper I believe is more just St Helens History, though recently everything historical that St Helens seem to do seems to mention Newton.

Yes, it is opposite the primary school, on the corner, diagonal to the road.

That house was originally the end house on the street, the street came in from Park Road, went past the front of the school, and then turned at that house towards the Blue Lion and the High Street

So I suppose when they built that house, they considered it at that angle, to have a nice view over the field into the park, with the railway bridge at Park Road visible from its front door.

The rest of the road through to Crow Lane wasn't completed for a number of years, so maybe there was enough doubt as to whether it was ever going to happen to make the builder of that house, angle his building for the best of the available view.
