Doris Chorley born 1901

Postby Nikkipridham58 » Sun May 13, 2012 4:29 pm

Hi I'm wondering if anyone can help me ? My grandmother DORIS CHORLEY was born in earlstown in About 1901 her father was called Harry Chorley . What I am wanting to find out is her mothers name who she always told me died during childbirth having her . I can trace Harry Chorley on the 1911 census when he was married to a lady called Hannah Chorley but I don't believe this lady to be Doris's mother as it lists Doris on the census as Harry's illegitimate daughter so I am wondering if Hannah was her stepmother ? My grandmother also told me she spent a lot of time with a grandmother and an aunt who I believe may have run a hotel in Newton le willows. I know my grandmother visited India in 1921 and that she moved to north yorkshire to work in a military hospital as a secretary and eventually married a man with the surname Johnstone and then in 1928 married my grandfather Alfred young a professional footballer and lived in Easington Durham later moving to Lincoln . I also believe Harry Chorley may have had other children named Nora Sydney Mary Maurice who died as a baby and a couple of others. If any one knowes of any of these people's lives and can help me I would be very grateful . I believed they lived at 25 Cross lane Earlestown .

Hi, could if you have any other info, give a little more on that address, 25 Cross Lane, and maybe an approximate date.

There is a burial for a Maurice Chorley, here in the local cemetery; buried on 18 June 1909, aged 1 month.
He's interned with others, but of different surnames.

Hope this may be of help.

Hi thanks for that info I believe The baby Maurice to be my grandmothers half brother the son of Hannah and Harry Chorley but I believe that my grandmother Doris Chorley only shared the same father and that her mother had died during childbirth and was being reared by Harry and his new wife Hannah I can't find a birth registration for my grandmother hampered by the fact that I don't know her mothers name as my grandmother was illegitimate its ths mothers name I need. I don't suppose you know the names of the other people intered with Maurice do you please . They defiantly lived at Cross lane in 1911 but for how long after I don't know but my gran never mentioned living anywhere else but Newton le willows when young . Thanks Nikki.

There are three males called Tully on the 1911 census living at the same address as the chorleys I suspect they are Hannah's brothers from Ireland and a Tully in the same grave as Hannah's baby that died.Rhe marriage would have taken place a year after my grandmas birth I wonder who looked after her for that year as she told me her mother died having her in August 1901 or 1900

Hi thank you every one for being so helpful I am really grateful for your help the one thing that baffles me is that she always celebrated her birthday on 15th of August so if she was born then why would her birth have been notified in the second quarter of 1901 even if she, had been born in 1900 it was still be very late for the birth to be notified in the 2nd quater of the following year unless you got longer to notify a birth in those days . . . Anyone any ideas please ? Thanking you all again . Nikki

If I worked it out correct that address, 25 Cross lane is where the 'Compension Cottages' are situated and that house would be the one on the end with it's entrance at the side. It's size from the exterior must be decieving as to have 11 persons living there in 1911.

It would appear from what I found that, Harry Chorley married Hannah Tully on 20th November 1902 at a register office in Warrington.
Doris doesn't seem to be listed in the 1901 census (april 1901) so that birth register for her is probably correct.

I see she travelled to Boston Mass. in 1913, and her address is as above. Also your mention of a visit to Calcutta in 1925, on this occasion her last adresss was in Wingate, Durham.

It also seems that the family home was still in Cross Lane at the end of the Great War - I can make out Nora, Sidney, Harry and Margarets names, but not Doris.

I have now found out Doris was actually born withe the surname Singleton. Here mother would have been called Hannah Singleton at that time she did become Hannah Chorley but not till 1902. Unfortunately there seems to be no marriage for Hannah to a man called Singleton so why she was using this name I am not sure . I know about Hannahs early life and about the period after she married Harry but can't find out anything about why she took the surname Singleton. Can any one help ?
